The Honorable Michael P. Meehan is President & CEO of Squared Communications.
For 30 years, Meehan has been at the epicenter of the communications, politics and policy spheres, bringing clear and concise successes from the combative court of Capitol Hill to helping companies, foundations, trade associations, non-profits and issue coalitions navigate their crucial priority policy issues.
During his time on Capitol Hill, Meehan served as chief of staff for a U.S. Senator and worked in key advisory positions for many U.S. Senators, including a Senate Majority Leader, as well as several U.S. Representatives. In addition, Meehan spent years directing the top political and communication posts to all three national Democratic Party Committees.
As testimony to his ability to find consensus and generate progress, both Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush nominated Meehan to serve as a member of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), which oversees all U.S. international broadcasting companies in the area of public diplomacy. Governor Meehan served on the bipartisan BBG from 2010-2015 where he was the chair of the Strategy and Budget Committee as well as the Global Internet Freedom Committee. He also served as chair of the board of Radio Free Asia and the Middle East Broadcasting Network. Governor Meehan was honored by the Visual Artists Guild with the Champion of Free Speech Award in 2013.
As an expert in communications, national and international media, message development and implementation, polling and election politics, Meehan is well positioned to build targeted and personalized public relations campaigns that achieve determined public policy and media goals.
Meehan was a senior communications advisor on John Kerry’s presidential campaign, where The New York Times wrote that he “specializes in adversarial situations.” Smart details and quiet passion are other unique elements of Meehan’s portfolio. As a crisis communications expert, he helps people and companies successfully navigate any situation. From sports reporting in his early years to teaching social studies, to senior private sector experiences as the first president of BGR Public Relations to international media official, Meehan has a wide range of experience, domestically and abroad.
His nuts-and-bolts knowledge of how to connect in reality and not in hype is crucial to his success. His media training has been hailed as irreplaceable, most recently working with C-suite executives preparing for their IPOs and financing rounds.
In addition to growing a successful communications and political consultancy, Meehan spent three years as senior vice president at Virilion, a digital media company from 2008 to 2011. He holds a degree from Bates College in political science and education. As an expert in media, communications and politics, Meehan appears on national television news programs and serves as a guest lecturer at universities like Columbia, UC Berkeley, Harvard, UCLA, Stanford and others. Meehan also serves on National Journal’s Political Insider panel. Meehan has three daughters and lives with his wife Tovah just west of the Potomac in Alexandria, Virginia.
